After the introduction of digital tax monitoring in 2014 (scrapping the old-fashioned paper discs in favour of ANPR recognition), the DVLA is now planning to part ways with physical driving licences as part of their initiative for a ‘fairer, greener and more efficient’ UK transport network. Here are three key things driving instructors and learner drivers need to know about the roll out.

Provisional licenses will now be digitised

Currently learners have a plastic green provisional licence much like the full pink driving licence issued once you pass your test. These changes will see the provisional cards moved online in the form of a digital document which can be shown when needed. This process actually began back in 2015, when the UK government scrapped the paper counterpart of driving licences. The DVLA’s plan includes the digitisation of all driving licences in years to come, to ensure drivers have access to all the documentation they need close to hand on their phone when travelling by car.

Paper test certificates will also go online

At the moment, learner drivers receive a paper certificate when they pass their driving test – but all that is set to change with the introduction of this new initiative. In an effort to reduce paper usage, the DVLA will now issue digital certificates.

The DVLA is currently developing an app to eliminate paper altogether

As part of the modernisation process the DVLA is also planning on introducing an app which will eventually replace all current online and offline processes and documents. This app will include tax, MOT and driving licence details all in one place – but it’s a few years off completion yet.

These changes are nothing to worry about – and you’ll be given plenty of time to prepare. If you have any questions or would like to know how the changes may directly impact upon you, you can speak with your driving instructor.
